County Londonderry
County Londonderry is one of the six counties of Northern Ireland. The Bann River borders its eastern side while the Foyle River runs along the west side. The county also edges the northwest shore of Ireland's biggest lake, Lough Neagh. The city of Londonderry, also known as Derry, originated in the sixth century and has been able to maintain its rich history, culture, and traditions throughout the centuries. The defensive walls used in the 17th century have even been carefully preserved. The county itself has managed to stay true to its history while incorporating the modern, which is evidenced by the 14 golf courses situated in the northern region. The north is the ideal setting for golf with a rugged terrain characterized by steep cliffs, dunes, and the stunning Atlantic shore. One of the most popular clubs is Portstewart Golf Club, which sits at the northeast tip of the county. It is home to not just one but three 18-hole courses that play along the coast, each with a unique character. Castlerock Golf Club is another local favorite for its challenging championship design laid across rolling sand dunes.
