While its somewhat small size and population may cause County Sligo to be overlooked, it is actually filled with historical and cultural attractions that are worth a visit. Carrowmore, an ancient cemetery that is one of the four major passage tomb cemeteries in Ireland, is situated on the Cuil Irra Peninsula in Sligo. There are over 30 megalithic tombs still in existence at Carrowmore. Sligo's awe-inspiring landscape was the subject of many of the works of Nobel Laureate W.B. Yates who grew up in the northern part of the county. Southern Sligo is known far and wide for its traditional music. It has produced dozens of well known artists and is home to several annual music festivals.
Another attraction the county is known for is its golf. County Sligo Golf Club, also called Rosses Point, was actually founded by Yeats' uncle and brother. It is a traditional links course that is known for its panoramic ocean and mountain views. Enniscrone Golf Club, which actually consists of two championship courses, is another set of courses that boast an authentic links layout and spectacular location amongst sandy beaches and towering mountains.
