Course Directory / Ireland / County Offaly
County Offaly sits at the center of Ireland. The Heathery Slieve Bloom Mountains occupy the southeast of the county, while the rest of Offaly's landscape consists of mostly flat bogland. The River Shannon forms the western boundary between Offaly and the counties of Galway and Roscommon. Near the river lies one of Offaly's most notable attractions, Clonmacnoise. It is a monastery that was founded in the sixth century with a strategic location that allowed it to become a major center of religion, education, and craftsmanship by the ninth century. Towards the southern part of Offaly in Birr, another major attraction is the 19th-century telescope at Birr Castle.
While there are plenty of historical curiosities to enjoy, the wealth of wide-open spaces means that Offaly is also an excellent location for parkland golf. Birr Golf Club is an enjoyable stop before or after visiting the castle. The layout is spread across ridges and hollows creating undulating fairways that are also lined with mature trees. On nearly the opposite side of the county is Tullamore Golf Club, another challenging parkland course set amongst dense thickets of mature trees.
