County Limerick is in southwest Ireland where the River Shannon widens before emptying into the Atlantic. The county is home to the historic Lough Gur, a large horseshoe-shaped lake that wraps around Knockadoon Hill between Herbertstown and Bruff. Megaliths from the Stone Age still remain in this area, which has been inhabited by humans since 3000 BC. All of Limerick is certainly rich in history as evidenced by the thatched-roof houses and medieval churches that are found throughout. Limerick's landscape is sprinkled with hills and ridges but overall it is comparatively one of Ireland's flatter counties. That, however, does not make any one of the nine golf courses in Limerick any less interesting. Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort is probably the most well known of the group. The manor house itself sits along the River Maigue and dates back to the 19th century. The grounds now boast a luxury hotel and a Robert Trent Jones-designed course. Limerick Golf Club has its roots in the 19th century as well, making it one of Ireland's oldest golf courses. A number of courses are accented with historic castles and ruins, most notably at Rathbane Golf Club situated in the suburbs of Limerick City.
