Landlocked County Kilkenny is made up of undulating limestone plains bordered by gently rolling hills. The scenery can be quite stunning, especially in the valleys of the Rivers Nore and Barrow. The city of Kilkenny, with its narrow, winding streets and ancient buildings, is known as the Medieval Capital of Ireland since it was the unofficial capital of the country in the middle ages. Kilkenny is a vibrant town with a good nightlife scene, excellent restaurants and art galleries as well as shipping. County Kilkenny is also known for its sports, which including the ancient Irish game of hurling as well as fishing, shooting and golf.
As far as golf is concerned, Kilkenny has excellent options. Kilkenny Golf Club is a parkland course that not only hosts championship events, but boasts several interesting structures on it, including an ancient Irish kitchen on the 10th tee. Mount Juliet Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus design that hosted the Irish Open and is considered one of the best parkland golf courses in Ireland. And Castlecomer Golf Club, long considered one of the best nine-hole facilities in the country, has been expanded to 18 holes.
