Course Directory / Ireland / County Galway
Known as the "stone wall county," because of the prominent use of stone walls as boundary markers, County Galway offers up some of the most beautiful scenery in Ireland. Named after its principle city Galway, which is situated by the sea on the west coast, County Galway has plenty of places worth exploring. The city of Galway, also called the "City of Tribes," has a diverse culture and vibrant atmosphere with its many cafes, music venues, shopping and festivals, such as the famous Galway Arts Festival held each summer. The county is also known for its mountain ranges, including the Twelve Bens that dominate the national park of Connemara. In Galway Bay, you'll find the Aran Islands and a cottage where author John Millington Synge stayed.
In terms of golf, you'll find a nice mixture of parkland and links golf course in County Galway. Portumna Golf Course, for example, is a terrific parkland layout, surrounded by trees on the banks of Lough. Or travel to Gort for the Gort Golf Course, a championship design by 1989 European Ryder Cup hero Christy O'Connor. Other worthwhile options include Connemara Golf Club, Mountbellow Golf Club and Loughrea Golf Club.
