Whether you are a scratch golfer or a 30 handicapper, Falconhead Golf Club promises to be a fun and manageable day of golf. While most of the top notch courses in the area are private, Falconhead made a splash when it debuted as a daily fee public course in 2003. A team from the PGA Tour Design Center laid out the playing field on rolling land ideally suited for golf. The intent was that one day Falconhead Golf Club, which offers five teeing options spaced between 5,170 yards and 7,181 yards, would bid to host a tour-quality tournament. You ll find a highly intriguing and fun mix of holes routed on interesting terrain here. Streams and creeks wind through a site that is shaded with gnarled oaks and cedar trees. The ground at Falconhead Golf Club is full of movement from the tee boxes to the elevated greens. This championship golf course puts a premium on precise shotmaking on both tee shots and approach shots. Strategically placed bunkers add extra challenge to the game, while balls struck askew can skip off at the margins into brush and trees. The good news is you can usually find your ball if it winds up in trouble. Falconhead Golf Club accommodates approach shots to the putting surfaces via the air or along the ground. As you would expect in Texas, wind is a prominent factor and complicates club selection. The variable-sized greens were built to PGA Tour standards and offer intriguing pin positions. Falconhead Golf Club s most memorable test is the par-3 8th, a hole widely considered one of the very best and most beautiful par 3s in all of Texas. The green on this striking one-shorter sits on a limestone ledge that cantilevers above a creek. Three cascading waterfalls add to the charm of a large green that is hard to hold. Although homes line many fairways at Falconhead Golf Club, they are generally set back a bit from the fray. The club features a full driving range, a chipping area with a practice bunker, and a putting green. The club has an inside bar area that usually offers a few food specials along with grab-and-go items. Falconhead Golf Club may be a rare public course in a zip code dotted by exclusive private playing fields, but it is a worthy neighbor and one of the choicest and most popular tee times you can make in Austin.
