Neshanic Valley Golf Course, the flagship facility of the Somerset County, New Jersey Park Commission, is home to 36 golf holes designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. Hurdzan-Fry may be best known for Erin Hills Golf Course in Wisconsin, site of the 2017 U.S. Open, but Neshanic Valley Golf Course is another of the former design partners' top championship creations. Since opening in 2004, the course has hosted numerous prestigious men s and women s championships, topped by the 2012 USGA Women s Public Links Championship. Neshanic Valley Golf Course spreads out over 420-acres of former farmland that overlooks the historic Neshanic Valley and the nearby Sourland Mountains. A few structures left over from the site s farm days add to the aesthetics and ambiance. Play?occurs on three regulation championship nines and the 9-hole, par-32 Academy Course, widely regarded as one of the premier short courses in the entire United States. The three championship nines come even more highly decorated. Golf Advisor perennially rates Neshanic Valley Golf Course one of the top 10 courses in New Jersey and GolfWeek magazine recognizes it as one of the Top 50 Municipal Courses in the United States. When you arrive at the facility you ll take on the 18-hole routing determined by the course scheduler. The Lake, Ridge and Meadow nines are accurate descriptors of the championship nines. All three sport a links-style aspect with wide-open, generous fairways bordered by tall fescue grasses and buffeted by the wind. Neshanic Valley Golf Course is anything but easy. You ll find intriguing movement in the land as well as impressive variety to the holes and green complexes. Wetlands enter the fray, sometimes extending from tee to green. Make your selection from among the five sets of tee markers carefully, as the forced carries on the tee shot can be intimidating. Devilish strategic bunkering, along with false fronts and falloffs at the elevated putting surfaces make par on any hole a good score. The natural environment of Neshanic Valley Golf Course attracts prolific wildlife, and the facility works with Audubon International to protect and enhance the natural realm. When you have a tee time to play the championship course you can warm up at one end of the driving range and on a putting green. More extensive practice options are available by securing a day pass from the Neshanic Valley Golf Course Learning Center (separate fee). The championship course has a pro shop and a grill room with seating both indoors and outdoors.
