Are you the type of golfer who likes to put your game to the test on the finest and most difficult courses you can play? A tee time at The Bridges Golf Club in San Ramon, one of the highest rated and most challenging tests in Northern California, fits the bill perfectly. Golfers come from all around the Bay Area and beyond to this dramatic, fun, scenic, and formidable layout in the Tri-Valley region of Mt. Diablo, about 35 miles east of downtown San Francisco. Johnny Miller and Damian Pascuzzo, working for Robert Muir Graves golf course architecture firm, originally laid out the Bridges Golf Club in 1999. In 2013 Jay Blasi came in to re-route the layout and make it playable for ordinary golfers. The course rambles through a number of small valleys amidst a residential community. Creeks and ravines populate the rugged rolled terrain, making for a scenic joyride the proceeds from one tough hole to another. You will encounter some blind or obscured shots at The Bridges Golf Club. Reaching for your driver is often not a wise decision since the landing areas narrow in strategic places and well-struck tee shots may run into trouble. Wind also complicates club selection. Numerous forced carries off tee and elsewhere provide all the thrills target golf has to offer. The 15th and 18th holes, two of the most formidable tests at The Bridges Golf Club, both require two forced carries to reach the green. Oh, and lies and stances are almost never level. The natural slopes of the terrain tilt toward a gulley. Slicers beware--the gulley is usually on the right side of the holes. On the higher hillsides of the course the grass and scrub vegetation is tall and ornery. Do you have the swing and the mettle to pull off these shots? The Bridges Golf Club constantly asks that question, which is why skilled players gravitate to this beauty of a playing field. Thankfully, The Bridges Golf Club has taken steps to make the course more playable. More than 80 bunkers were removed from Miller and Pascuzzo s original design. The areas beyond the fairway are also somewhat more hospitable thanks to the club s policy of keeping the rough and the native grasses lower than was the case originally. Even so, you ll still be well served to bring extra balls when you play The Bridges Golf Club. If you aren t on your game or if you feel overmatched, you can still enjoy the scenery. The tee boxes on the 8th hole are a highlight, as they showcase a gorgeous vista looking out over the valley. If you want to warm up before the round, The Bridges Golf Club has a driving range, chipping area, and putting green. The grand clubhouse is styled after a Mediterranean villa. It is a popular spot for weddings and special events. The View Restaurant serves good food and is noted for its picture windows and balcony overlooking the course and the surrounding countryside. A tee time at The Bridges Golf Club promises to be a memorable experience from start to finish at a stunning, upscale facility where you ll find a friendly reception along with formidable golf.
