At PGA WEST, a La Quinta, California destination that boasts the most acclaimed and prolific collection of courses in the Coachella Valley, public golfers have a choice of five different courses. The oldest of the five is the PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course. When this course first opened as an amenity of the La Quinta Resort & Club, the PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course became a rousing alternative to the area s private country club layouts and sparked the transformation of Palm Springs into a resort golf mecca. The PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course immediately earned national acclaim. Thanks to its spectacular stretches of golf right along the Santa Rosa Mountains, it began appearing on American top-100 course lists. Typical of Pete Dye courses, it poses an exacting challenge, but at the same time it is eminently playable for less accomplished golfers provided they select an appropriate tee box. By today s standards, the PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course is rather short. Pot bunkers, rocks, tall grass, and tough greens provide most of the difficulty. Although a number of holes are closely lined by houses, once you get literally right up by the mountainside, you ll be mesmerized by the beauty of the PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course. Holes 14-17 rate as the highlight stretch of the round. The par-5 15th wraps around the craggy slopes en route to a green further protected by bunkers. Sixteen, a par 3, is a big-drop one-shot hole with a green surrounded by a moonscape of boulders. It s one of the iconic and most photographed par 3s in the Coachella Valley. The PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course shares the Pete Dye Clubhouse with the PGA WEST Pete Dye Dunes Course. Pete s Grill in the clubhouse serves breakfast and lunch. The historic La Quinta Resort & Club, which dates back to 1926, is next door, offering Spanish-style casita accommodations grouped around swimming pools and gardens. Whether you plan to stay somewhere or just come in for the day, the PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course is a treat to play.
