Atlantis Country Club located less than 10 miles from Palm Beach International Airport, is a popular and affordable tee time option in a part of South Florida where private courses abound and green fees of public-access facilities are typically very pricey. Tucked within a gated community, this?fun and highly playable layout is well known in Palm Beach?County for annually hosting the prestigious Pop Sikes Father and Son Team Championship tournament. Dick Wilson and Robert Simmons designed Atlantis Country Club in 1973. It is not your typical South Florida golf course. Neither water nor palm trees are dominant features of the playing field. Instead, the course boasts stands of mature live oaks and massive banyan trees and reminds many players of layouts they might find in North Carolina or Virginia. Experienced traveling golfers who have been coming to Palm Beach County for many years may see some similarities with the former Haig and Squire courses at PGA National Resort. Atlantis Country Club features a mix of wide open and tighter holes on a playing field that extends from 5,120 yards to 6,542 yards against a par of 72. Five sets of tee markers, along with numerous doglegs and the varying size of the fairway landing areas, present golfers with exciting but not overwhelming challenges. Chances are you ll hit every club in your bag at some point on this layout. A twisting creek and a couple of small lakes bring water into play on nine holes, but none of the hazards is all that formidable. The chief defense of par at Atlantis Country Club comes from its bunkers. Some 100 strategically placed sand pits complicate access to the landing areas and the greens. The elevated, quick, moderately undulating, Champion Ultradwarf putting surfaces are a strength of the course. Just beware that balls often trickle off the edges of the greens. All of the elements that make Atlantis Country Club a treat for golfers of all skill levels are evident on the signature par-3 17th hole. The tee shot, played from tee boxes beside majestic trees, must carry a creek situated well to the left of the elevated, stoutly bunkered green. Atlantis Country Club prides itself on outstanding course maintenance. Landscaping around the tee boxes and elsewhere lend the club a garden-like quality. Practice facilities include a range for irons only and a putting green. While the clubhouse doesn t have a restaurant, the snack bar serves drinks and has outside seating overlooking the golf course. When you re in Palm Beach Country and looking for an affordable, enjoyable round that won t beat you up, consider a tee time at Atlantis Country Club.
