La Cantera Golf Club in San Antonio boasts a gorgeous and fun 18-hole championship golf course in San Antonio. The playing field, long known as the Resort Course, is a Jay Morrish-Tom Weiskopf design from 1995 that is the chief amenity of the La Cantera Resort. Tee times are open to anyone no overnight stays are required. La Cantera Golf Club used to be a 36-hole facility, but its Arnold Palmer-designed course permanently closed in 2021. Morrish and Weiskopf s layout has always been the star attraction, as they built the Resort Course to host the PGA Tour s Valero Texas Open. The course enjoyed a 15-year run (1995-2009) as a Tour venue. La Cantera Golf Club has been a fixture on Golf Advisor s list of the Top Courses in Texas and it frequently is rated San Antonio s top course. This dramatic Hill Country layout rambles over dramatic up and down terrain in the shadows of Six Flags Fiesta Texas amusement park. Majestic live oaks line the housing-free fairways as the playing field winds amidst rushing streams and limestone rock outcroppings. More than 70 sand bunkers further define the holes at La Cantera Golf Club and help defend par. When you play here, you ll be walking in the footsteps of many PGA Tour greats. The pros always made bundles, which may explain why the layout is so much fun for everyday golfers. La Cantera Golf Club is very playable and full of exciting holes. You ll be hard pressed to play a more exhilarating test than the 7th, a downhill, drivable par 4 that drops 70 feet from the tee boxes to the fairway en route to a green backdropped by Six Flags s Iron Rattler roller coaster. A roller coaster is the perfect symbol for La Cantera Golf Club s heaving, constantly moving terrain. Morrish and Weiskopf s design is full of variety. The round begins with the two toughest holes on the front nine a long par 5 and a long par 4 before it eases up. Distance shouldn t be a problem at La Cantera Golf Club five sets of tee markers give players options between 4,878 yards and 6,954 yards. Elevated tee boxes, plunging tee shots, exciting risk-reward options, and rock channels leave players wondering what exciting shot comes next. The eye-candy is especially tasty on the six holes that showcase views of the San Antonio skyline, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and the scenic Texas Hill Country. Practice facilities include a driving range, chipping area with sand bunker, and putting green. You ll find a full-service pro shop and a grill restaurant right next to it in the clubhouse.
