Suneagles Golf Club, conveniently located in Eatontown, just a few miles from the Golden State Parkway in eastern Monmouth County, New Jersey, is an atmospheric Golden Age golf course with a fascinating history. A tee time to play this 1926-vintage A.W Tillinghast classic promises to be a fun round for players of all skill levels. It s an added delight for aficionados of golf course architecture now that a long-term project has revitalized the club. Tillinghast, one of America s great golf course architects, is best known for major championship venues such as Baltusrol, Bethpage State Park Black Course, and Winged Foot, but he considered Suneagles Golf Club to be among his best creations. When you play here you walk in the footsteps of the legendary Byron Nelson, who won the 1935 New Jersey Open at the club for the first professional victory of his career. Orville Moody, the 1969 U.S. Open winner, finished runner-up in a 1967 military tournament at Suneagles Golf Club during a period when the U.S. Army owned the course. Officers' barracks from Fort Monmouth once lined a section of the course, but the barracks have been replaced by townhomes. Nonetheless, most of the fairways at Suneagles Golf Club are free of housing. Tillinghast took pride in building a championship course that would challenge skilled players while providing a fun and manageable test for lesser players. Four sets of tee markers enable golfers to take on the course from as short as 5,380 yards and as long as 6,385 yards. Suneagles Golf Club is a fairly open layout with roomy fairways and groomed turf that is nice to hit from. While stands of mature trees dot the course, the chief danger when golf balls don t find the fairways is thick rough and ornery vegetation. Water enters the fray on a few holes thanks to a creek and a couple of ponds. Strategically situated bunkers, some of which are quite large, also help defend par. Suneagles Golf Club's recently redone greens are large with pronounced undulations. If you want to warm up before your tee time, the club has a driving range and a putting green. You ll also find a pro shop and Tavern 19, a restaurant located by the 9th hole. With its revitalized Tillinghast golf course and on-going club improvements, Suneagles Golf Club is once again a choice tee time near Monmouth Beach in central New Jersey.
