Raptor Bay Golf Club, located just north of Naples in Bonita Springs, Florida, is one of the most most peaceful and beautiful semi-private courses in South Florida. Over the years this unique and fun Ray Floyd design from 2001 has also earned a devoted following because of its playability for all skill levels, fine course conditioning, and environmentally-friendly ethos. Raptor Bay Golf Club offers wonderful seclusion as it tucks amidst thick woodlands abutting the 500-acre Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve. A rarity in Florida, the course is free of fairway homes or development. You ll see soaring towers of the unaffiliated Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa above the tree line as well as a few condominium buildings in the distance but little else to distract you. Water, wetlands, tall grasses and sand are dominant features of this extremely flat playing field that features very large greens. The round at Raptor Bay Golf Club presents a mix of holes. The round begins in friendly fashion, with wide-open playing corridors. By the 5th hole the tenor changes as those corridors tighten. You ll need more precise control of your ball flight the rest of the way. The most unique feature of Raptor Bay Golf Club is that it has no formal bunkers. Sandy washes or waste areas of crushed Coquina shells run alongside the fairways and greens. You can ground your club in these areas and you can also drive your cart through the waste areas. No matter where you are on Raptor Bay Golf Club, water hazards seem to be ubiquitous, though the good news for anyone playing from the forward tees is that there are few forced carries. While there s no rough to speak of at Raptor Bay Golf Club, beware that when the fairway turf is running firm, there s little to stop balls that have been hit errantly. Shots frequently run through the sandy waste areas into water, wetlands and the forest. A good bit of Raptor Bay Golf Club s bite comes from the putting surfaces. Though the greens are large and low-lying, they are very undulating and often crowned, so they run off at the edges. A few false fronts will also test your short game skills. Chances are you ll feel good when you have a tee time at Raptor Bay Golf Club. When the course was built, care was taken to restore many acres of wetlands and preserve wildlife habitat. The course immediately achieved Audubon International Gold Certified Sanctuary status. Birdlife is prolific here and you may even see a bald eagle. In addition to the golf course, club facilities include a driving range and practice area, a full service pro shop and a dining room. A day at Raptor Bay Golf Club is a memorable experience in a tranquil, natural realm. If you can find your ball, you can make your way around the course quickly. Anyone with balky joints will find the flat terrain and lack of formal bunkers a joy. You won t even have to bend down to pick up a rake!
