With three nines carved through the thick forest of pine trees northwest of Houston, Longwood Golf Club offers public golf at a good value. The course -- which was designed by former PGA Tour player and former University of Houston golf coach Keith Fergus as well as another former UH golf coach, Harry Yewens -- the course has lots of challenging holes with a variety of doglegs, water that comes into play on several holes, and plenty of strategically placed bunkers. The greens are generally on the small side. The nines -- Post Oak, Pine, and Palmetto -- have four sets of tees. The longest of the three layouts is the Pines at just more than 3,500 yards, while Palmetto is 3,240 yards. One of the most difficult holes is the second on the Pines Course. It's a 449-yard par 4, a dogleg left that ends with a green fronted by a pond. The same pond also comes into play on the approach shot of the 426-yard, par 4 first, so getting rough the first two holes on the Pines unscathed is a great start to your round. In addition to the 27 holes of golf, Longwood also offers a driving range, short-game area, and practice green. Lessons are also available from the professional staff. And inside the clubhouse you'll find a well-stocked golf shop as well as a restaurant. There's a pavilion as well as an outside patio, capable of hosting 200 guests. The large clubhouse is available for meetings, presentations, weddings, and special events.
