Another example of terrific golf in the Dominican Republic is the Lakes Barcelo Golf Course at Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort. Redesigned by P.D. Dye in 2010, the course, which is located on the east coast, features rolling fairways that work their way through a lush mangrove forest. Featuring plenty of water and 122 strategically placed bunkers, the course is as challenging as it is beautiful. Playing just under 6,700 yards from the tips, however, there are five sets of tees, starting at 4,769 yards, to accommodate golfers of all ages and abilities. One of the signature holes is certainly the ninth, a par-3 with an island green, somewhat reminiscent of Dye?s father?s famous? 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. That same lake also plays prominently on the 18th hole, a short par 4 with water off the tee and the approach. Almost any miss will find a watery grave. Besides the course, Barcelo offers a double sided driving range, practice green, chipping areas, and practice bunkers. Lessons are also available. The clubhouse, which has locker rooms with showers, has a beautiful terrace overlooking the 18th green. It offers a fully stocked golf shop. The clubhouse restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
