One of the best public golf courses in the Magnolia State, Mossy Oak Golf Club is a wonderful Gil Hanse design that pays tribute to golf across the Atlantic in Scotland, but certainly has its own identity. Built by the George Bryan family, who is also responsible for one Mississippi's other top courses, Old Waverly just down the road, Mossy Oak Golf Club opened in 2016 and was named the third best new course in America by Golf Digest. A somewhat minimalist design that takes advantage of the natural beauty of the land, the course is ideal for walking, and caddie services are available. Extra attention was paid to preserving the natural foliage of the Mississippi Black Prairie region. And to top it off, all 18 holes of this golf course are memorable. The rest of the course is just one great hole after another. There are five sets of tees on this par-72 layout, topping out at 7,212 yards. The first five holes take golfers through the prairie, oaks and grasses. The finishing stretch is particularly strong, starting with the 223-yard, par-3 15th, which is well-protected by large bunkers. The 16th is a long dogleg right par 4, while the 17th is a great risk-reward par 5. The finishing hole is the no. 2 handicap hole on the course, a 458-yard par 4 with a tee shot that plays over water. In addition to the course, Mossy Oak has great practice facilities that include a beautiful driving range, short-game area, and practice putting greens. Stay-and-play cottages are also available. And inside the magnificent clubhouse is a terrific golf shop with lots of great apparel, accessories and equipment, locker rooms, and a lounge.
