Thunder Bay Country Club is a historic, picturesque, and tranquil 9-hole layout in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The prolific Scottish-American course architect Tom Bendelow laid out the course on hilly terrain in 1910. Nowadays, members, locals and holiday golfers enjoy its fun and challenging layout, its natural setting and scenery, and its friendly ambiance. Thunder Bay Country Club may have just nine greens, but each hole features two sets of teeing areas that provide a different look for anyone who chooses to go around twice. Several of the alternative tees sit in a different spot from the front nine tee decks, as the club strives to provide something akin to an 18-hole experience if you go around twice. Thunder Bay Country Club isn t a long course. Chances are you won't be reaching for your driver on most holes. This par-36 test with two par 3s and two par 5s offers a collection of sporty-length tests. Still, while three of the par 4s are short, one of the par 5s reaches 540 yards and the finishing par 4, the toughest rated test of the round, measures 390 yards. Along the way you ll face some tight tree-lined playing corridors, hilly fairways laden with moguls, a par 3 with a river crossing in front of the green, putting surfaces defended stoutly by bunkers, and undulating greens. Many players opt to walk at Thunder Bay Country Club (pull carts are available), though equal numbers choose to take a cart. The club exudes a welcoming attitude toward visiting players and will even find you a game if you are looking to play with a member who is familiar with the course. Tee sheets fill up fast in summer when the weather in this northwestern Ontario city is idyllic. Fall is also gorgeous with its colorful foliage, though be advised that the club closes for the season in mid to late October. Practice facilities at Thunder Bay Country Club are limited to just a practice green. The clubhouse features a pro shop outfitted with a limited supply of merchandise.
