Montebello Golf Course, located in the City of Montebello, California, is a popular municipal course in East Los Angeles. This very busy facility is known for its enjoyable layout and mix of fun holes. Montebello Golf Course boasts a rich history. Course architect Max Behr laid out the original playing field for a private country club in 1928. The City of Montebello took the facility over in 1941. The course players enjoy nowadays is an extensive remodel by David Rainville and Gary Bye from 1999. Montebello Golf Course tucks into a 120-acre site that, while bordered on the perimeter by some houses and city streets, is otherwise a pure golf realm with minimal distractions. The central feature of the course is a large hill that gives slope to the entire layout. Three sets of tee markers provide manageable options for players of all skill levels at 5,543 yards, 5.941 yards, and 6,528 yards (the scorecard also lists a 6,462-yard option). Trees and bunkers both fairway and greenside present the chief defenses of the layout. Many players remark that Montebello Golf Course plays long. It is a par-71 test that features four par 4s in excess of 400 yards from the back tees. The front nine challenges many players for distance, though it finishes with a tiny par 3 (105 yards from the back tee). The shorter back nine at Montebello Golf Course brings water into play on four holes, as three lakes were added to the playing field during the 1999 redesign. On the par-4 10th, a lake covers much of the front of the green and wraps around to the right and behind the putting surface. Depending on the position of the pin, the par-3 16th hole may call for a carry over full water if you are taking dead aim, though there will also be a safe side of the green you can aim at as well. Nice stonework borders around the lakes of Montebello Golf Course add to the aesthetics of the layout. Mature trees line the fairways and provide shade, while the close proximity of tees to greens make Montebello Golf Course a nice course to walk for those who can handle the hill and the noticeable slope in the land. Though there s not a lot of undulations on the greens, players should take the slope into consideration. The driving range at Montebello Golf Course is located across the street from the golf course. Check its hours of operation they may not be conducive to your tee time. You'll find a putting green and chipping area back on the main site. The course also features a pro shop and a grill restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. With its pleasant, vintage playing field that is free of housing, Montebello Golf Course is a muni worth considering the next time you are looking for an affordable, good-value tee time in Los Angeles.
