If there s a hidden gem golf course in the Dominican Republic, PGA Ocean s 4, the chief amenity of a couple of Bahia Principe resorts outside of La Romana, is it. Located 30 kilometers from La Romana and about 100 kilometers east of Santo Domingo, this facility, formerly known as La Romana Golf Club, is a seaside treasure with four holes on the Caribbean Sea. PGA Ocean s 4, which debuted in 2017, boasts 27 holes of golf an 18-hole championship course and a short 9-hole par-3 course. The championship course provides great bang for your buck with tee times that typically are more affordable than the more renowned seaside courses in the Dominican Republic. The first course designed by the Maverick Design firm, PGA Ocean s 4 features five sets of tee markers that provide appropriately differentiated challenges at distances ranging from 5,132 yards up to 7,334 yards. While the ocean holes a pair of par 3s backdropped by the Caribbean and a par 4 and a par 5 that extend hard by it all the way from tee to green give the club its name and truly steal the show, the remaining holes offer plenty of fun and fascination as well. Lakes and waterfalls surround four other holes that enjoy a parkland-style setting, and yet another section of PGA Ocean s 4 plays amidst rocks and sand in the manner of a desert course. This appealing variety, along with spacious, player-friendly fairways and greens, make for a fun round. You ll find lots of bunkers on this well manicured Troon Golf facility that is allied with the PGA of America, but the sand pits are generally shallow and easy to recover from. The greens are smooth and easy to read. Wind is often a factor (even on the greens) on PGA Ocean s 4 championship course. The facility s Executive Course features nine par 3s that play as long as 218 yards and as short as 98 yards from three sets of tees. It s an ideal playing field for beginners, juniors, seniors, those who want to work on their short games, and anyone wishing to warm up before tackling the championship 18. PGA Ocean s 4 s excellent practice facilities include a full driving range and a large putting green. The elegant clubhouse features a pro shop stocked with high-end merchandise and a restaurant with patio seating. A tee time at PGA Ocean s 4, the Dominican Republic s most underrated course, is a good way to cap a visit to La Romana and well worth a drive from even farther away.
