Curlewis is regarded as one of the most progressive and exciting public access golf courses in Australia.
Purchased in July 2015, by renowned local winery and cidery business operators, Lyndsay and David Sharp, Curlewis has rocketed up the course rankings after the new owners began investing heavily in improving the course and clubhouse.
Since that time Curlewis was honoured to receive the inaugural “Australian Golf Digest Club Excellence Award” for their contemporary and forward-thinking approach to golf.
The Curlewis course was always highly regarded, but the new owner’s investment has seen it now being recognised as one of Golf Australia's Top 50 Australian Public Access Courses and ranked in the top four courses in Geelong, Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast regions.
With a sandy base, a minimum of trees, and naturally undulating couch fairways this Vern Morcom designed links is one of the best courses on The Bellarine. Following the opening of the course in 1970, the original design was again enhanced in 1976 by a Kevin Hartley course master plan.
In 2001, significant improvements were again made following the adoption a second master plan by renowned course architect, Michael Clayton. With challenging bunkers and firm, fast greens, it is the wind that often determines the level of playing difficulty.
Mike Clayton and the team from OCCM were commissioned by the new owners for a five-year term, commencing in 2016. As part of this agreement OCCM conduct annual course audits and provide recommendations to the owners on improvement for the coming year.
The course measures 6,150 metres and is a challenging par-72. A challenge for players of all standards and a true test of golfing ability. There are large contoured greens, naturally undulating couch fairways and the course has a well bunkered, links style layout - watered year round. This iconic, much-loved course of The Bellarine, Victoria is only a one hour drive from Melbourne,15 minutes from Geelong and offers stunning vistas across Corio Bay.
The comfortable clubhouse offers a wide array of delicious, chef-prepared, dishes in the bistro, along with a renowned a la carte dinner menu every Friday and Saturday night.
The venue also provides a new $8 million mini golf, driving range and licensed hospitality venue.
