Maplewood Golf Club, located just off of Highway 59 some 35 miles south of Winnipeg in St. Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba, is an exciting, sporty, and scenic layout. The course, which debuted in 1981 but was abandoned by many years, got a new lease on life when it was redesigned in 2010. It s been a hit with Winnipeg-area golfers ever since, and it has appeared on Golf Advisor s list of the Top Courses in Canada. Maplewood Golf Club enjoys a rural setting with no homes around, although a newer section of the course sits across the road from most of the playing field. The par-70 layout is a scenic treat, as the winding Rat River twists through the course and crosses a few fairways. An added bonus is that unlike the Winnipeg area's typical very flat courses, the golf grounds feature some noticeable inclines and undulations. With three tee decks, Maplewood Golf Club can be played at 4,538 yards, 5339 yards, and 5,742 yards. The par-34 front nine has two par 3s and no par 5s, while the par-36 back nine follows the standard formula with its two par 3s and two par 5s. Water enters the fray on no fewer than fourteen holes at Maplewood Golf Club. After an opening stretch of mostly open holes, the routing moves to the newer, sand-based tests across the road that play faster and firmer. The character-filled, wooded back nine rambles by the river and stands out as the highlight of the round. Maplewood Golf Club abounds with short par 4s that top out at around 300 yards. Long hitters won t use their driver very often. The nicely varied layout features tight fairways, exciting doglegs and risk-reward water carries, so you ll have to decide whether to try to cut the corner on several holes or play conservatively. Accuracy is a must to stay out of the trees and water. Note that there are no sand bunkers on the course. Maplewood Golf Club features small, elevated and undulating greens. The newer, sand-based putting surfaces on holes 6-9 roll quicker than the rest of the putting surfaces. Many players walk rather than take a cart, as the routing is short. Tee time rates do not include a cart. Practice facilities are limited there s just a putting green where chipping is permitted. The clubhouse features a pro shop and a snack area. Maplewood Golf Club is a fun and manageable layout for players of diverse skill levels can manage, so it s no wonder the course has a large following among Winnipeg golfers who eagerly make the drive down to St. Pierre-Jolys.
