Red Hawk Golf Club in Las Cruces, New Mexico, has piled up honor after honor ever since it opened in 2011. The links-stye layout, which rambles on a windswept plateau about 10 miles northeast of the city, was GolfWeek s #2 public-access course in New Mexico in 2022, and it has appeared numerous times on Golf Advisor s list of the Top Courses in Mexico, including garnering the top spot on a couple of occasions. Considered one of New Mexico s most challenging layouts, Red Hawk Golf Club is also the only course in Southern New Mexico to be rated among the Best in State by Golf Digest. The course features four sets of tees that enable golfers to play from a distance they can manage on this tough test. From the tips, the layout measures a whopping 7,523 yards, but from the forward markers it can be taken on at a more comfortable 5,616 yards. Red Hawk Golf Club boasts a high desert setting with glorious mountain surroundings, but housing has already gone up by the driving range and plans call for residences to line the fairways. Red Hawk Golf Club is predominantly flat, with native desert areas pinching in on the generally wide fairways and strategically placed bunkers posing an imminent threat. Five water hazards bring water into play on eight holes, and wind presents additional difficulty on this fully exposed layout. Judging distances and picking out a line can be a challenge, especially when the wind is up. A course guide helps immensely. Red Hawk Golf Club s greenside bunkers come in varying sizes and shapes, but they are strategically placed and rather deep. The large, elevated putting surfaces present possibilities for intriguing pin positions. The greens are usually quite firm and balls often slip off at the edges. Red Hawk Golf Club is walkable, but most players take a cart. The course, which is open year-round, stays green throughout the year, and members say conditions are nicest in the fall and winter. Practice facilities include a driving range and putting green. Red Hawk s clubhouse features a pro shop and a bar and grille.
