Golf Courses Near Wausau, WI
Wausau is a small central Wisconsin city bisected by the Wisconsin River and surrounded by forests, hills, and lakes. One of Wausau’s favorite tee times is Tribute Golf Club, a fun, hilly, and very pretty nine-hole course that was originally built by the local American Legion Post in 1929. The 18-hole Trapp River Golf Course starts out on open, flat terrain before running alongside the river and finishing on woodsy hilly ground. Conditions are improving under the same management as the Tribute Golf Club. Pine Valley Golf Course, located just beyond Wausau, features a strong four-hole finish highlighted by the short signature par-3 17th hole that drops 60 feet from tee to green. Rib Mountain Golf Course, a nine-hole par-32 executive-style course located at the base of the Granite Peak Ski area, is ideal for families or for honing your short game. In the spring you can play golf and ski on the same day. You may score a Hot Deal if you play Merrill Golf Club, a hilly 1929 vintage course that is more open than a lot of courses in the area. For a truly memorable and colorful golf experience head to Stevens Point to play the wonderfully designed, flower-laden and supremely beautiful SentryWorld Golf Course. Sentryworld has been rated the 44th best public course in the U.S. by Golf Digest. The signature par-3 16th hole on this very playable course is framed by 33,000 colorful flowers.
Wausau, which is exactly halfway between the equator and the north pole, is gorgeous in summer and fall as locals and visitors make haste to the river and nearby lakes. Popular pastimes include horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, canoeing and kayaking, white water rafting (it can be done right in town), fishing, hiking, biking and horseback riding. One of Wausau’s favorite attractions are performances by The Water Walkers Central Wisconsin Water Ski Show Team. Downtown historic Wausau features a couple of museums, a restored show palace theater, boutique shops, restaurants and pubs. With so much to do and so much golf at hand, the city’s slogan rings true: “This is as Up North as you need to be.”
