Golf Courses Near Sheboygan, WI
Sheyboygan Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan, is called the “Bratwurst Capital of the World,” which doesn’t exactly fit with another nickname it has picked up—”The Malibu of the Midwest.” When it comes to golf, the latter moniker seems more accurate, as Sheboygan and neighboring Kohler parade a brilliant collection of ultra-high-end Pete Dye-designed courses to the world stage. The Straits Course at Whistling Straits just hosted the Ryder Cup. Whistling Straits second course, the Irish Course, rambles adjacent to The Straits over the same heaving dunesland. At Black Wolf Run, the River Course is an exhilarating and demanding ride past forests, over kettles and moraines, and across the crystal-clear Sheboygan River. Meadow Valleys starts out with open, gaping fairways, but by the back nine it becomes every bit as thrilling as the River Course. A new 10-hole par-3 course rounds out the Kohler resort lineup. Meanwhile, the nationally acclaimed daily-fee Bull at Pinehurst Farms, which charges through thick woodlands and wetlands on a ridge-dominated moraine, shares a zip code with the Kohler courses but is a bargain by comparison. Sheboygan’s more everyday courses are the 27-hole Sheboygan Town & Country, and Riverdale Country Club, which opened in 1929 and boasts atmospheric mature trees and a traditional feel. Both courses are suitable for novice players.
You’ll know you are in Sheboygan when you hear the distinctive accent of its residents. Or when everyone starts munching on brats. Bratwurst is “the meat that made Sheboygan famous.” Lake Michigan made it famous as well, as locals and visitors take to the beach and the water with gusto. Sheboygan is also a great destination for families. Kids love the Bookworm Gardens, a fantastical botanical garden inspired by children’s books, the interactive children’s museum, and the Sheboygan Railroad Museum, which features a running maze of model trains. Even if you never thought about remodeling your house, the Kohler Design Center is worth a visit, and there’s a full-scale museum exhibit on the ground floor. The American Club hotel is a virtual museum as well with its historic aura and vintage photos lining its hallways. If you want to pamper yourself, the renowned Kohler Waters Spa is the place to do it. Heck, you owe it to yourself to splurge for a true resort experience at Destination Kohler to experience all of Sheboygan/Kohler’s premier golf courses. Just be sure to toast your rounds here with a beer and a brat.
