Situated about 20 miles west of Washington, DC, Fairfax is an attractive Northern Virginia suburb that is home to George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College. As for golf, all roads in Fairfax seem to lead to Penderbrook Golf Club, which features several do-or-die shots over lakes and ponds as it winds through a housing development. In Oakton, Oak Marr Golf Complex is a 9-par-3 muni. Nearby Clifton boasts impressive public golf: Twin Lakes is an appealing 36-hole municipal facility with the wide-open Lakes Course where you can swing freely, and the tighter, tree-lined Oaks Course, and Westfields Golf Club, a housing-free, tree-lined layout that exists in a nice environment and has a strong back nine. Westfields perennially appears on Golf Advisor’s list of the top courses in Virginia. All of these courses offer Hot Deals.
Fairfax offers something for everybody. Mount Vernon, George Washington’s estate, is America’s most visited historic home. Frying Pan Farm Park recreates rural life from the 1920s to 1940s and in recent years has provided the White House with the Thanksgiving turkeys that fortunately receive a Presidential pardon. To explore history and science of a different sort, visit the National Air and Space Museum’s Udvar-Hazy Center at the edge of Dulles Airport. Nearly 200 aircraft (including the Concorde) and spacecraft (including the Discovery Space Shuttle) are on display. For dining, shopping, and entertainment, head to pedestrian-friendly Old Town Fairfax, or, alternatively, Fairfax Corner, an attractive shopping district with numerous tasteful restaurants. Finally, Fairfax is also known for its festivals, especially Fairfax Spotlight on the Arts, a three-week-long celebration of music, theater, dance and more. If all this doesn’t suffice, head into D.C. or just play more golf.
