Golf Courses Near Alexandria, VA
Located across the Potomac River from Washington, Alexandria, VA is a historic place that was George Washington’s hometown and now is home to numerous intimate museums, an irresistibly charming Old Town, and a vibrant waterfront. While an abundance of private and military golf courses predominate in Alexandria’s orbit, the most convenient courses that welcome tee times and Hot Deals are munis. In Alexandria itself, Greendale Golf Course spreads out over nearly 150 acres and features water on nine holes, most notably the par-3 17th that overlooks the entire course. Pinecrest Golf Course is a hilly and narrow 9-hole muni that also doubles as an 18-hole footgolf course on weekends. Lorton is home to a couple of popular layouts: Pohick Bay Golf Course and Laurel Hill Golf Club, which rambles on land that was formerly a prison. Laurel Hill hosted the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Note also that not all military courses are off limits. The 36-hole Fort Belvoir Golf Club is one of the finest military facilities you’ll find anywhere in the world and it offers Hot Deal tee times.
In 2020 the readers of Conde Nast Traveler rated Alexandria the no. 5 best small city in the U.S. Old Town Alexandria is wonderful for walking, and its brick and cobblestone streets and sidewalks lead to historic buildings, homes, and churches as well as boutiques, galleries, breweries and world class restaurants. At the waterfront it’s fun to catch a water taxi or hop on a Potomac River cruise. Although George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate is just nine miles from Old Town and the metro can take you into the heart of D.C. in no time, you may want to stay put in Alexandria. Popular attractions include the Inventors Hall of Fame and Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, which showcases a historic pharmacy still filled with original medicines. No matter that you can’t sample them if something ails you– the best medicine on a visit to Alexandria may be a round of golf and a stroll through Old Town.
