Maryville is a suburb of Knoxville in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. When you’re looking for tee times, you’ll find good golf courses all around. Lambert Acres Golf Club is a scenic 27-hole course that showcases the Smokies. Of the three nines, the Red is the longest, followed by the White. The Orange nine is the newest and hilliest. Egwani Farms Golf Club perennially appears on Golf Advisor’s list of the best courses in Tennessee (#2 in 2020) and it has also earned honors as one of friendliest facilities in the country. In nearby Townsend, Wild Laurel Golf Course, an Audubon International certified facility, tucks down in a valley and offers stunning mountain vistas. Maryville is a gateway to Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It’s also a college town— Maryville College, founded in 1819, is one of oldest colleges in the South. The town’s role in education goes back even further, as one of the area’s top attractions, the Sam Houston Schoolhouse, was constructed of logs two years before Tennessee became a state. It’s the oldest school building in Tennessee. For adult “after school” enjoyment, Maryville is home to a couple of vineyards and wineries. The highlight of downtown Maryville is the Capitol Theatre, an old movie palace converted into a performing arts venue. While Tennessee’s top tourist draws such as Dollywood, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge make for easy days trips from Maryville, when residents look for day-to-day fun and nightlife they head to nearby Knoxville. Just be advised that there’s more golf in Knoxville, too.
