Unique among American cities, Bristol exists in two states—the Tennessee-Virginia state line runs down State Street so that Bristol, Tennessee lies on the western side of the street and Bristol, Virginia is on the eastern side. Although you’ll find tee time options on both sides of the state line, most of the courses in the area are in Tennessee. Steel Creek Golf Course in Steele Creek Park is Bristol, Tennessee’s 9-hole muni, while Bristol Golf Club is a pretty and popular 18-hole public layout surrounded by mountains. The Golf Club of Bristol, a private club that dates back to 1894 and was the club that first organized golf in the Volunteer State. Known for its risk-reward holes and meticulously maintained fairways and greens, it’s one of Tennessee’s finest courses and it allows non-member play when it isn’t busy. On the Virginia side of Bristol, Clear Creek Golf Club is a hilly gem that winds around a large lake and boasts a stunning peninsula green among its seven holes that touch the water. Back in Blountville, Tennessee, Tri Cities Golf Club is a 27-hole facility that offers Heat Deal discounts.
Bristol may be a small city, but it a favorite of tourists and it is famous in two different spheres—motorsports and country music. Bristol Motor Speedway is a legendary, steep-banked short track that can seat over 150,000 spectators. It is called “the last great coliseum” because of its architecture and it’s historic racing duels. You’ll also find a motorsports museum and a drag strip. Bristol also stakes a claim for being the birthplace of country music —the early recordings of Jimmy Rogers and the Carter family were made here. Every year in September the Rhythm & Roots Reunion festival is a three-day celebration of Bristol’s Appalachian country music heritage.
