Golf Courses Near Asheboro, NC
Best known for being home to the outstanding North Carolina Zoo, the city of Asheboro is located an hour north of the Pinehurst/Southern Pines golf mecca. Asheboro isn’t thought of as a golf destination, but four courses, three of which offer tee times, list an Asheboro address. At Asheboro Country Club, which rambles amidst tall oaks and pines, the 18th hole plays near a dam. Asheboro Municipal is a vintage nine-hole Donald Ross creation with small, domed greens. Tot Hill Farm is nationally known– it enjoys cult status because it is one of only seven courses the late, great golf course architect Mike Strantz designed. Once rated the seventh hardest course in the U.S., it is spectacular, rugged and extreme. Years ago the 14th green was so diabolical the superintendent put up a “Three-Putt Maximum” sign.
The North Carolina Zoo features African and North American animals roaming freely in a vast natural habitat. The best way to see the animals is to walk along the zoo’s five miles of trails. Another popular Asheboro attraction is the North Carolina Aviation Museum which showcases restored planes from World War II through the Vietnam War. In summer, the Asheboro Copperheads baseball team plays in the collegiate Coastal Plain League. Asheboro calls itself “the Heart of North Carolina,” but most golfers’ hearts will be longing for the myriad courses about an hour to the south.
