Home of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum as well as the 36th president’s hometown, Independence is a city that offers plenty of history and other things to do. Named after the Declaration of Independence of 1776, Independence is a city of around 120,000 people located just east of Kansas City near the Kansas border. Historical sites include the Truman House, the Vaile Mansion and the 1959 Jail, Marshal’s Home and Museum, where the outlaw James brothers were once incarcerated. Other attractions in Independence include the National Frontiers Trails Museum, 1827 Log Courthouse and Independence Square. The area also has plenty of golf courses that offer tee times to the public. Among the most popular is Drumm Farm Golf Club, which features a Michael Hurdzan championship 18-hole course as well as a nine-hole executive layout.
