Golf Courses Near Hagerstown, MD
Hagerstown, a small city in Western Maryland at the crossroads of I-81 and I-70, is called “Hub City” because it is a junction point for auto and train routes. While Hagerstown isn’t quite a golf hub, anyone looking to make tee times will have a range of options not only in Western Maryland, but also in neighboring Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Black Rock Golf Course, one of Maryland’s top courses, is a scenic layout that begins in a valley before climbing to higher ground that yields expansive views of the Appalachian Mountains. You’ll find eight tee boxes on the holes at Beaver Creek Country Club, a layout that rambles through corridors of tall oaks and white pine. The Greens at Hamilton Run, a 9-hole muni that dates back to 1957, is ideal for a quick round. Yinglings Golf Course, a short, executive-style par-3 course, caters to beginners and family outings. Two highly regarded facilities across the border in Pennsylvania are Greencastle Golf Course and Whitetail Golf Resort, where the wide-open, hilly front nine is much easier than the more dramatic, mountain-style back nine.
Hagerstown’s motto is “A Great Place to Live, Work, and Visit.” The town is a draw for visitors making pilgrimages to Antietam National Battlefield, site of the bloodiest single day of fighting in the Civil War. The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum showcases the city’s role as a railroad center. Discovery Station, a hands-on science museum, also includes the Hagerstown Aviation Museum which spotlights the town’s days as an aviation production center. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Historical National Park is a neat nature spot with hiking trails and scenic boat tours. Motorsport fans head to Hagerstown Speedway, a famous dirt track, and the Mason-Dixon Dragway. Culture and the arts abound here, too. Downtown Hagerstown was Maryland’s first Arts and Entertainment District. There always seems to be something going on on Main Street.
