Ankeny, one of Iowa’s fastest growing cities, is located just 15 miles north of Des Moines and 25 miles south of Ames. Though Ankeny was once an agricultural center, it’s now one of Des Moines’ more prominent suburbs. While Ankeny is home to three private golf clubs, golfers looking for public-access tee times will find a number of attractive courses nearby. Otter Creek Golf Course, Ankeny’s muni, has earned Golf Advisor honors as a top-25 course in Iowa and one of the top 25 most improved golf courses in the entire U.S. It’s a facility with an outstanding g practice facility and a links-style layout with small fast greens and lots of bunkers, ponds, mounds and tall grass. The 27-hole Woodland Hills Golf Course, home to a player-friendly 18-hole test and an executive-style par-29 short course. are vintage layouts from 1927. Although Ankeny has a small town feel, it’s close enough to Des Moines so that the attractions, restaurants and nightlife of Iowa’s capital city are easily accessed.
