    Golf Courses Near Groton, CT

Groton, a central Connecticut maritime town on the Thames River, has long been known as “The Submarine Capital of the World,” but it is also home to Pfizer’s largest research & development center. Military personnel have access to a 9-hole military course on the submarine base, but if you are looking for a tee time in and around Groton, you won’t be disappointed. Shennecossett Golf Course is a links-style Donald Ross design with hidden bunkers and classic Ross greens. It’s one of the very best and toughest public courses in Connecticut. Look for Hot Deals at Norwich Golf Club in Norwich, a challenging 1925-vintage muni that flows on undulating terrain and features small, elevated greens. In North Stonington, Lake of Isles is a 36-hole facility that includes the private South Course and the public-access North Course, a challenging Rees Jones design on rolling terrain. The North Course is a chief amenity of the adjacent Foxwoods Resort Casino. Quick rounds are the rule at Cedar Ridge Golf Course, an 18-hole par-3 course located just off of I-95 in East Lyme. When looking for tee times, keep in mind that Groton’s orbit also extends into neighboring New York State and Rhode Island. Notably, Wood River Golf Course and Richmond Country Club in Hope Valley, Rhode Island are highly rated courses that regularly earn raves from those who play them.

Groton is home to the Naval Submarine Base, one of the world’s largest submarine bases. For over 100 years, the General Dynamics Electric Boat Corporation based in Groton has supplied the U.S. Navy with submarines. One of Groton’s top attractions is the Submarine Force Museum, where the USS Nautilus, the first operational nuclear submarine, is on display. Several other attractions can be found in Mystic, a charming New England seaside village that is partly within the Groton’s town boundaries. The Mystic Seaport Museum is one of America’s premier maritime museums. At the Mystic Aquarium you can see rare Steller sea lions and beluga whales. The Mystic River Bascule Bridge, a unique drawbridge, swings into action every hour between May and October. Mystic is a favorite tourist destination with lots of restaurants.
