The Currituck Club, the anchor of a golf course community in Corolla, North Carolina, is the jewel of Outer Banks golf and one of the premier layouts in the Tar Heel State. Over the years The Currituck Club has made appearances on Golf Digest's and Golf Advisor's lists of the Top Courses of North Carolina as well as Golf Advisor's honor roll of the Friendliest Courses in the United States. Esteemed course designer Rees Jones laid out The Currituck Club in 1996 on remarkably diverse coastal terrain that formerly was a hunt club. The playing field alternates between spectacular sand dunes, wetlands, two lakes, maritime forests, and dense seaside vegetation. Although lots of residences line the fairways, they are generally well removed from the action. Highlights of the round include views of Currituck Sound and, for many players, opportunities to see deer, geese, turtles, osprey and eagles. The Currituck Club features five sets of tee markers (with an additional hybrid option) that play as short as 4,661 yards and as long as 6,769 yards. While Rees Jones has a reputation for designing playable courses, they also tend to be quite challenging, especially from the back sets of tee markers. Water and/or wetlands enters the fray on most holes at The Currituck Club, though the game is not about forced carries. With the exception of a few tee shots, in all other cases Jones gives players a way around the water hazards if they so choose. The Currituck Club features one strong hole after another. The dunes and the openness of the golf grounds provide a links-style game filled with impressive elevation changes. One of the toughest and most memorable holes is the 16th, a par 5 that parallels Currituck Sound as a buffer of maple, oaks, and thick vegetation intervenes between the fairway and the shoreline. The 17th is a par 4 located by the Sound, with a tee shot over an inlet of the estuary. A highlight stretch on the back nine plays alongside the vast saltwater marsh. When the wind whips, The Currituck Club really bares its teeth. Jones s green complexes are highly intriguing. His sloping greens can make putting an adventure. If you want to warm up before your round, the club s practice facilities include a driving range, chipping area with sand bunker, and putting green. The large, elegant clubhouse is home to a full-service pro shop, men s and women s locker rooms, and a grill restaurant. The Currituck Club is one of Rees Jones s finest designs. Don t delay when making your tee time slots fill up fast at this popular, upscale Outer Banks facility.
