Lely Resort Golf & Country Club Mustang Course has been delighting local and visiting golfers in Naples, Florida ever since it opened in 1996. This Lee Trevino design, and its sister course, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. s Flamingo Island Course, instantly turned Lely Resort Golf & Country Club into a public golf paradise in the notoriously private-club-centric Naples golf realm. Lely Resort Golf & Country Club Mustang Course, situated on the southeast side of Naples, 15 minutes from downtown, is a pretty layout that fits the bill. Although the course tops out at 7,230 yards, players can choose an appropriate distance from among the six different sets of tee markers. Twelve lakes along with wetlands populate the golf grounds. However, since many are lateral hazards set well back from the line to the green, they really only factor into play on about half of the holes. Lely Resort Golf & Country Club Mustang Course features wide, flat fairways with spacious bailout areas. Trevino s layout gives players ample opportunities to recover when they hit errant shots. The bunkers, while numerous, are not deep, and the large greens are open in front, so they present accessible targets and invite bump and run approaches. Also, since the putting surfaces are not overly undulating, you may feel like you can drain a sizable putt or two during the round. The strength of Lely Resort Golf & Country Club Mustang Course is its finishing stretch from 15 to 18. The long, scenic par-4 15th narrows precipitously with water pinching in from the left and right on the approach shot. On the par-3 16th you must carry water and bunkers to reach a green that is further defended by bunkers at the back of the putting surface. Eighteen is a classic home hole with bunkers looming right in the landing zone off the tee and a final approach to a well-bunkered peninsula green. Lely Resort Golf & Country Club Mustang Course presents one fun and challenging test after another. The club s impressive practice facilities include a spacious all-grass driving range with a plethora of target greens, a chipping green with a practice bunker, and two putting greens. A spacious Mediterranean-inspired clubhouse serves the club s two public-access courses and features a well-stocked pro shop, lockers rooms, and a restaurant that is open throughout the day and offers outdoor seating.
