Based on the first appearance that Bobby Jones made at the British Open, you wouldn’t have guessed that he would become one of the most beloved players in the history of this major, and of the town of St. Andrews, as well. Jones was just 19 when he played the Old Course for the first time during the Open of 1921 and wasn’t fond of the course. He played fairly well in the first two rounds but, during the third round, he became so disgusted with his performance after shooting a 46 on the first nine holes that, once he couldn’t get out of the Hill Bunker on the eleventh hole, he grabbed his ball, tore up his scorecard and withdrew. The reaction from the fans and the press was blistering and forced Jones to learn to control his emotions. He then returned to the British Open in 1926 for the first of two consecutive victories and made his mark in 1930 when he won both the British Amateur and British Opens before going on to become the first man to win the Grand Slam. Almost 30 years later, in 1958, he became only the second American after Benjamin Franklin to be presented with the honor of becoming a Freeman of the city of St. Andrews.**

When Bob Charles won the 1963 British Open at Royal Lytham, he became not just the first and only left-handed golfer to win, he is also the first and only golfer from New Zealand to receive the Claret Jug, as well. Charles turned professional in 1960 and went onto win more than 60 international tournaments including 5 PGATour wins, 4 New Zealand Opens and three New Zealand PGA Championships. His career continued and then, after the age of 50, he won 23 Champions Tour titles, along with other senior tournaments. He was became Sir Bob Charles in 1999 when he was named Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit and on November 10^th of this year, Sir Bob will become the first lefty & Kiwi to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The first time that anyone broke 70 during the British Open was in 1904 at Royal St. George’s when not just one, but three golfers shot in the 60’s – including that year’s champion, Scottish professional Jack White, who shot a 69 in the final round for his lowest score of the tournament, along with J.H. Taylor who shot a 68 in the final round and James Braid, who was technically the first golfer to break 70 when he shot a 69 in the third round. Then, almost 90 years later at the 1993 Open - which was once again held at Royal St. George’s - Greg Norman won his second Claret Jug with scores of 66-68-69 and 64. BUT … it was actually Ernie Els, who played before Norman in the final round that year, who has the distinction of being the first player to shoot below 70 in all four rounds with scores of 68, 69, 69 and 68.

The 1995 British Open at St. Andrews was just one instance where streakers have made an appearance at this major, which seems to be very popular with naked fans for some reason.

That year, the victim was John Daly - who saw two people running towards him immediately after making his putt on the 18^th hole to win the playoff against Italy’s Costantino Rocca. One was his wife, and the other was serial streaker Mark Roberts, wearing only – well you can see for yourself. The first time we can find that the Open was streaked was in 1985 when a man ran onto the 18^th green and got punched by golfer Peter Jacobsen. Then, when Tiger Woods made his first professional appearance at the 1997 British Open, Nikki Moffat ran out wearing only a G-string with tiger stripes painted all over her body. And in 2000, again at St. Andrews, three female and two male streakers made an appearance, including stripper Jacqui Salmond who ran out and danced around – appropriately enough - the flag pole on the 18^th green just after Tiger teed off on the 18^th hole before going on to win his very first British Open.
