Who was the first golfer after Francis Ouimet to win in his major championship debut?
Although Ben Curtis is well-known these days for wearing NFL colors during tournaments, he certainly wasn’t a household name when he played in his very first major at the 2003 British Open. In fact, even a lot of the American players didn’t know who he was. But, maybe being an unknown helped take the pressure off of him and he shot a 69 in the final round for a final score of 1-under-par 283, which was enough to make him the first golfer since Francis Ouimet to win their major championship debut and moved him from 396th in the world, to 35th place on the World Golf Rankings.
