The Valero Texas Open is the third oldest tournament on the PGA Tour and began in 1922 as a winter circuit tournament. Many of the biggest names in the sport have played in this event, which has always been held in San Antonio and it was in January of 1923, during just its second year, that the very first playoff occurred. After William Melhorn took a six on the 18th hole, Walter Hagen ended up as champion by one stroke and was awarded his share of the $6,000 purse, which was the biggest one ever given out at a tour event at that time.
