What other golfer besides Lee Trevino has won the Vardon Trophy five times?

  1. Wes Turner Says:

Many references to Lee Trevino using a “Coke” bottle to challange and win bets with other golfers. The “Coke” bottle answer should also be considered a correct answer.

  2. Mike Greene Says:

I’d be happy to shoot a 40 on a hole course!

  3. Mike Greene Says:

    9 hole course - sorry

  4. Terry Srodawa Says:

Todays answer is somewhat similar to the 12 holes at the old St. Andrews course.
As Wes Turner states above there are other references to Lee Trevino using a Coke bottle to get money in games. Example list below:
“Favorite golf story: As a poor young caddy, Lee Trevino would bet players that he could beat them even using a Coke bottle to tee off. He perfected hitting a ball off a Coke bottle straight down the middle about 100 yards, then would drill a 3-wood on the green and take their money.”

Until the story mentioned by Terry Srodawa, all of the stories I’ve ever heard refer to a Dr. Pepper bottle. Trevino even got an endorsement from Dr. Pepper in the 1970s as a result of the stories. Anybody here old enough to remember the commercial he did where he attempted to dance while singing the old “Dr. Pepper, so misunderstood” song?

Besides, would an Atlanta business publication acknowledge the existence of any soft drink other than Coke? ;-)

While we know that there are a few references to Trevino using a Coke bottle, the overwhelming number of sources for this particular question are consistent with the Dr Pepper bottle and that includes Trevino’s own autobiography, “SuperMex”. Our opinion is that if the man himself says it was Dr Pepper - then that is the most reliable source, in addition to the numerous other books, interviews and articles that corroborate the story. In fact, there are also articles and interviews where Trevino specifically states why he did NOT use a Coke bottle (the end was too rough). So, in this instance, we don’t feel that it would be fair to award people who answered “Coke” with the correct answer. One of the problems with the internet is that you can quickly pull a large number of sources on any question but, they are not all always correct (Wikipedia is notorious for having misinformation, for instance). We try our best to base our questions - and our answers, in particular - on either official sources (such as the official site of St. Andrews which stated that there were 22 holes in the original design) or reliable sources such as autobiographies - as, in this case, with Trevino’s book - interviews with the actual people in question and established publications. Once we find an official source and can verify it with multiple other materials, we will often use it on our show. We have always been willing to investigate a possible error on our part - we know we’re not perfect - and will make amends if we feel it is needed, but we have certainly learned on our own not to trust everything we find on the internet.
