I’m hoping the question is based on the 2008 rule change concerning non-conforming clubs. If it isn’t, I will need to change my answer!!!!

Are you sure you gave enough information with the 1/14/08 question?

Agreed, there are variations on the rule depending on format played.
Although, the questions asks about carrying, not utilizing.

Stroke play or match play ? Question is not clear enough and the answer is not complete if stroke play.

Our question today on the non-conforming club rule refers to stroke play as indicated by the answer choices of one stroke or two stroke per hole penalties. We apologize for any confusion.

Brian - believe it or not, this isn’t the first time we haven’t had a blooper at the end of our show. Hopefully it will be the last time this week!

This question really has two answers. C & D. Before 2008 it would have been D (disqualification), but in the 2008 book it reads:
*PENALTY FOR CARRYING, BUT NOT MAKING STROKE WITH, CLUB OR CLUBS IN BREACH OF RULE 4-1 or 4-2:
Match play - At the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is discovered, the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred; maximum deduction per round - Two holes.
Stroke play - Two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred; maximum penalty per round - Four strokes.
Match or stroke play - In the event of a breach between the play of two holes, the penalty applies to the next hole.
Bogey and par competitions - See Note 1 to Rule 32-1a.
Stableford competitions - See Note 1 to Rule 32-1b.
*Any club or clubs carried in breach of Rule 4-1 or 4-2 must be declared out of play by the player to his opponent in match play or his marker or a fellow-competitor in stroke play immediately upon discovery that a breach has occurred. If the player fails to do so, he is disqualified.
PENALTY FOR making stroke with club in BREACH OF RULE 4-1 or 4-2: Disqualification.
Meaning that C (2 strokes) could be the answer too. But that is per hole. I chose D, but think C and D could be argued.

While we didn’t intend for this to be a trick question, we will say this since there seems to be some confusion. This is 2008 and if there were any rule changes recently then that’s what we’re referring to. Good luck!

The question is not complete. The 2008 rule specifies the number of strokes per hole, but also states the maximum penalty strokes for the entire round.

There isn’t a correct answer with the rule changes for 2008. I have answered as close as possible to the correct answer for 2008 changes.

Gentlemen, comprehension is the key to the obvious answer.

Damn it, people. Read the question, answer the question! How hard can that be? Oh, I forgot who I was talking to - sorry. I certainly didn’t have any problem figuring it out!

The recent change in rule pertains to clubs that are not used and not conforming. It still leads to disqualification if the club is used. This minor detail seems to be missing from the question. Hope I made the right choice.
