In 1857 “A Keen Hand” was written by H.B. Farnie, which is older than any of the four selections for today. Of the 4 choices for today, 1881 is the oldest. Special prize?

None of the answers are correct. The instruction book, “A Keen Hand” is verified as the oldest.

“The first book of golf instruction can be firmly dated to this period, with the publication in 1857 of A Keen Hand, by H. B. Farnie.”

Vorra,
You will find out tomorrow that this was a trick question, of a sort. Your post is actually right, which also makes one of the answer correct.

Actually, it’s not even a trick question. The correct answer is there - all the comments about “A Keen Hand” are wrong, or maybe mistaken is a better way to say it.

We have had several comments come in regarding the correct answer and addressing some of the confusion surrounding the name of the book that was mentioned in earlier posts. However, since these comments actually give away the answer, we will wait and publish them tomorrow. Of the submissions we have received so far, 36% of the answers have chosen the correct answer.

I must concur, “A Keen Hand” seems to be the one! Another, “The Game of Golf” was written in 1896, as the first by a golf professional. But none of the names you gave are exact! Oops?

Actually, The Golf Manual, written in 1857, is correct! “A Keen Hand” was H.B Farnie’s pseudonym. Ooops, now everyone will have the answer to today’s question…
