It’s Monday, November 17th – I’m Keri Murphy and you might win a personalized set of Golf Pride grips - today on GolfNow’s trivia contest.

Hi, everyone, welcome back to a new week here on GolfNow’s Trivia Contest. Our featured GolfNow network course for today is Eagles Nest Country Club at Pebble Creek in Phoenix – just one of more than 1,000 courses in over 20 states where you can save when you book online with us at www.golfnow.com – the #1 tee time website in the nation. Okay, let’s get right to our first trivia question for this week, which is:

Which female amateur golfer retired from the sport and then was known by her married name of Lady Heathcoat-Armory? Was it:

A. Joyce Wethered

B. Dorothy Campbell

C. Gladys Ravenscroft

D. Enid Wilson

As always, just mark your answer on the entry form at GolfNow.com and tomorrow, we’ll tell you who it was and, if your answer was correct, then you’ll have one more entry in our computer with your name on it for our daily drawings.

Okay, now, let’s find out the answer to our final World Golf Hall of Fame trivia question from last Friday’s show, which was:

Which year did Carole Semple Thompson hole a 27-foot putt to win the Curtis Cup for the American team?

Carole Semple Thompson has been called the first lady of women’s amateur golf and has played in more than 100 USGA championships. She is just one of 11 players to have won both the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the British Women’s Amateur, helped America win four Espirito Santo Trophys and was awarded the USGA’s Bob Jones Award in 2003. But, it is the Curtis Cup where Thompson holds the record for most appearances on the American team, having played on 12 teams beginning in 1974 and it was in her last appearance in 2002, at the Fox Chapel Golf Club near her home in Pennsylvania, where she ended her Curtis Cup career by holing a 27-foot putt from just off the 18th green to retain the cup for the United States and Thompson then went on to serve as Captain at the Curtis Cup in 2006 and 2008.

So, if you answered D – then you were right, which means that you now have one more entry into our computer for our daily drawings and, today we’re happy to welcome Golf Pride Grips - the most popular grip on the PGA Tour – as a new sponsor and our prize today is a set of personalized Golf Pride grips. The personalized grips are available on Golf Pride’s most popular models in an assortment of colors and will provide you with a way to express your true identity on the course – and shave a few strokes off your game. Plus, we’ll also throw in a dozen personalized Titleist Pro-V1’s for a totally personalized prize. Okay, computer, show me today’s winner:

But, one record that he will always be associated with is being the first left-handed golfer to win a major tournament, after his victory at the British Open in 1963.

Herman Densmore Shute, known to most everyone as Denny, was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in the Veteran’s Category and is well-known for an important record that he held at the PGA Championship and so, with that in mind, our question for today is:

As always, mark your answer on the entry form at GolfNow.com, and on tomorrow’s show, we’ll tell you who it was and you can find out if your answer was correct. Okay, now, let’s find out the answer to our question from yesterday’s show, which was:

Which one of these countries does NOT have a golf course designed by Pete Dye?

Pete Dye is the fifth architect to be inducted into the Hall of fame and is known around the world for the golf courses that he designs. Some of his most famous courses here in the states include the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, Crooked Stick Golf Club in Indiana and Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, which he designed with help from Jack Nicklaus. He also has courses around the globe but, out of our answer choices, the country that does NOT have a Pete Dye course is Scotland, which is where he got much of his inspiration for design when he visited there in 1963.

So, if you answered D – then you were right, which means that you now have one more entry into our computer for our daily drawings and our prize today is one of our World Golf Hall of Fame prize packages, including a dozen personalized Titleist Pro-V1’s and, since we were just talking about Pete Dye, our prize package today will also include a copy of the book Pete Dye Golf Courses-Fifty Years of Visionary Design, autographed by architect Pete Dye. Which magazine published the first articles on golf by Herbert Warren Wind?

He was called the poet laureate of golf and Herbert Warren Wind’s 14 books, along with numerous essays and articles, certainly contain the evidence for that title. Who was Gene Sarazen flying in a plane with when he came up with the idea for the sand wedge?

There had been an earlier version of a sand wedge before Gene Sarazen’s, but because that early club had a concave face it was banned by the R&A and the USGA. Then, in 1931, Sarazen was in Florida for a tournament and went flying with Howard Hughes. While he was in the air, he noticed how the flaps adjusted downward during takeoff and used that principle to design his new club, which he made by applying solder to a Wilson pitching wedge. Sarazen actually called it a sand iron, and took it with him to the 1932 British Open, but kept it upside down in his golf bag so no one would see it. It worked great each time he got into a bunker and word began to spread as other players learned about the new club and, of course, now it’s an important club in every golfer’s bag.

So, if you answered D – then you were right and you now have one more entry into our computer for our daily drawings and our prize today is a Sun Mountain Deluxe Cart Bag. Okay, computer, show me today’s winner:

While the Eisenhower Trophy was first given out in 1958, the first women’s amateur event in this championship series was held in 1964 with teams from 25 different countries competing.
