Is this another bad question? According to the history of the World Golf Rankings the first identified #1 was Tom Lehman. The first at year end was Greg Norman. In between was Bernard Langer. WHich one were you looking for?

Is there a way to get a past winners list?

Steve, don’t know where you got your info but my search came up with a different answer than lehman. First list, according to what I found, was published just prior to the 1986 Masters. I am assuming this is the golfer they are looking for. Guess we will find out tomorrow which answer is correct.

Looks like the “List” is recalculated every Monday, so a rotating number of players is possible - such as happened the first year. I am guessing they are looking at the player who is atop that list at the end of the year - and there is only one on our answer list.
Fred - look in Wikipedia for your list of past winners - (If you are talking about the World Golf Ranking list
)

Even though injured…Tiger is number 1 right now on the World Golf Ranking list?

Hey Steve……. “FORE”

Fred - there is no master list of past winners. You either have to watch old shows in our archives or, if you subscribe to GolfNow’s daily e-mails, the Saturday e-mail contains the list of the previous week’s winners.

to Steve…
It took me less than 60 seconds to find the correct answer for today’s question. Before reading any of the comments on today’s page, I already had thought to my self that this was one of the easiest they’ve had in a while.

How about guessing… or an educated guess. No, don’t use the “InterWeb”, just think and post an answer. I bet most of you take a lot more “practice” swings than you should. Hit the damn ball!

Wikipedia provides a complete list and the first official #1 was Greg Norman in 1986.
Langer was never ranked #1.
I have no idea where that answer came from. It’s wrong.

Bob - Our answer came from the World Golf Ranking’s official website, plus Langer’s profile in the World Golf Hall of Fame, along with many other sources that confirmed it – including the Wikipedia entry for the Official World Golf Rankings. On the World Golf Ranking’s website, you can even pull up the very first list from April 7, 1986 that clearly shows Langer at #1.

I just double-checked various sources.
The first two UNOFFICIAL #1s were:
1984 Tom Watson
1985 Bernhard Langer
Given that, why isn’t Tom Watson the correct answer?
The first OFFICIAL #1 was Greg Norman in 1986, the answer I provided.
I’ve never won and hope to do so one of these days. Meanwhile, I appreciate what I learn about golf history while attempting to find answers to the daily questions. I participate in the trivia contest for the same reason I play golf: for enjoyment, not for achievement.
I wsh everyone a non-laborious holiday weekend.
