Which one of these golfers did NOT win the U.S. Amateur Championship?
Which one of these countries does NOT have a PGA Championship?
Hi everyone, I’m Keri Murphy and we’re giving away a Callaway Rangefinder on our Big Prize Thursday
edition of GolfNow’s trivia contest.
Welcome back to GolfNow’s trivia contest on this Big Prize Thursday. Our GolfNow network course for today is the Westridge Golf Course in La Habra, California and you can find great tee time deals at this course when you book online with us here at GolfNow.com.
With all the advances in shafts, club heads and balls, golfers are hitting the ball farther than ever before but even with all that new golf technology, you don’t want to hit the ball TOO far and, so, with that in mind, our question for today is:
What is the longest golf shot recorded in the history of the PGA Tour? Is it:
A. 525 yards
B. 612 yards
C. 787 yards
D. 803 yards
Mark your answer on the entry form at GolfNow.com and tomorrow we’ll tell you how long that drive was and, if your answer was correct, then you’ll add another entry into our computer for our daily drawings. Okay, now let’s find out the answer to our question from yesterday’s show, which was:
Which golfer was banned for life from one of the Greater Greensboro Open courses?
The Wyndham Championship in North Carolina is one of the oldest stops on the PGA Tour and is the last stop before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin. Originally known as the Greater Greensboro Open, for its first 30 years the tournament alternated play between Starmount Forest Country Club and Sedgield Country Club, where it returns this year for the first time in 31 years. Sam Snead won the first Open in 1938 and holds the record at this event with 8 wins. But, it was also Snead who was banned for life from Starmount following his 7th win at the 1960 tournament there. The course wasn’t in the best shape that year, and Snead made a joke that the owner of the course should fix up the course by digging up some of the tomato cans that Snead was rumored to have his money buried in. But, the owner of Starmount, Edward Benjamin, didn’t think Snead’s joke was that funny and banned Snead for life from playing at the course.
So, if you answered A – then you were right and you now have one more entry into our computer for our daily drawings and four our Big Prize Thursday drawing today, we’re giving away a Callaway LR550 Laser Rangefinder. Okay, computer, show me today’s winner:
And our winner is Ed Aultman of Denham Springs, Louisiana and Ed is our second two-time winner in just two days now. Who was the first golfer on the cover of LIFE Magazine?
LIFE magazine was the first news magazine in the U.S. that was all photographs with only minimal text. It was incredibly popular and came out every week for over forty years and the covers of the magazine have featured some of the most historic people and events in history covering everything from politics to wars to popular culture. Sports ocassionally made the covers, but only one golfer ever made it onto
LIFE, and that was Ben Hogan, whose birthday is tomorrow. Hogan was featured on the cover on the August 8th, 1955 issue, just after he had retired from professional golf following the U.S. Open that year and the magazine was where he finally revealed “the Secret” of his grip that he had developed but kept to himself during his career.

D. Jack Nicklaus
Just mark your answer on the entry form at GolfNow and tomorrow we’ll tell you who it was and, if you were right, then you’ll add one more entry into our computer for our daily drawings.
Okay, now let’s find out the answer to our question from our show last Friday, which was:
What golfer finished the first round in 47th place before going to to become champion at the PGA Championship? – B. John Mahaffey
Well, just like Jerry Barber who we talked about last week, John Mahaffey had his only win at the majors at the 1978 PGA Championship and, based on his performance in the first round, you wouldn’t have thought that he would be accepting the trophy a few days later. Mahaffey shot a 75 in the first round which put him in 47th place, eight strokes behind leader Tom Watson and he barely made the cut at the end of the next day. Going into the final round, Watson was still seven strokes ahead but when he bogeyed several holes and shot a double-bogey on the 10th, MaHaffey’s 8-under-par 68 resulted in a tie with Watson and Jerry Pate and forced the very first three-player playoff in the history of the tournament. Then, in just the 2nd hole of the playoff, Mahaffey made a 12-foot birdie putt to win his only major championship.
So, if you answered B, then you were right which means that you have one more entry into our daily drawings and our prize today is a Callaway stand golf bag. Okay, computer, show me today’s winner:
And our winner today is Martin Baldwin of Dayton, Ohio. Congratulations, Martin, and now, in order to receive this Callaway bag, all you have to do is send an e-mail to me at Keri@golfnow.com within the next 30 days and we’ll get your prize out to you.
