Located 17 miles east of downtown Cleveland, Manakiki Golf Course is an elegant public course. The classic Donald Ross design offers a variety of challenges including doglegs, water hazards, up-and-down shots, back-to-back par 5s, short, long, tight, and open holes, and two canyon holes.

Manakiki is rich in history. Its name is believed to be a Native American word for maple forest and was suggested by the predominance of maples along tree-lined fairways. The 200 acres were originally the summer estate of Howard Hanna, a prominent Cleveland indusrialist. The property was then obtained by a group from the Willowick Club and converted into Manakiki Country Club.

The Hanna Mansion was expanded into a beautiful clubhouse. In 1963, the east wing of the original Hanna Mansion, which mirrored the existing west wing was torn down due to a small fire and deterioration. The west wing was recently renovated to preserve its structural integrity and history.

In 1944, the property owners, Janes and Fannie Brown, offered to donate the course to the city of Cleveland. The city graciously declined to offer and it was then sold to Cleveland Metroparks for one dollar, under the condition that it must forever remain a golf course. A plaque in honor of the former owners still stands near the18th green.

From 1944 through 1960, Manakiki was operated as a private country club. On January 1, 1961 after the country club's lease was not renewed, Manakiki was open for public play.

Manakiki offers many great holes; #8 was considered the most difficult par 4 hole on tour in the '50s when Manakiki hosted the Carling Open. Hole #15 has also been selected as one of Cleveland's best par 3 holes. An electric trolley once carried golfers from the 15th green up the steep slope to the #16 tee. The mirror image canyon holes #10 and #18 are among the finest start and finish to nine holes in the country.

In 1990, a master plan was developed to renovate the golf course and restore much of its original character. The plan included installing water and irrigation systems, building a pond on hole #3, and restoring a pond at hole #15. Tees were rebuilt or restored on holes 6, 8, 9, 13, and 15. A continuous cart path was also constructed to assure that golf carts may operate regardless of weather conditions. In addition, sand bunkers that were taken out will gradually be restored to their original state.

A classic course, Donald Ross design Great muni course. Classic Donald Ross design, The terrain is tough and beautiful, it is a challenging course that requires a thoughtful plan to score well. All of the metropark courses are maintained quite well, Manakiki is no different. It gets a lot of play, and can be slow from time to time. Rated consistantly in the top ten courses in NEO by golfclevelandohio. I have played several Donald Ross designs, and I am never disappointed. There are a lot of fun shots to be had on this course. Challenging course yet enjoyable to plU This is one if my favorite courses. The course is in excellent shape with nicely trimmed fairways and not too high of rough as well. The greens are nice sizes and can be tricky if above the pin. My only negative ishole two where tree that is about 10 yards in front of hole needs to be trimmed. Last couple of times I have played here that tree has knocked my ball down. I like to play a nice 7-8 yard draw and tee box is short width wise and the tree limbs come into play. I highly recommend Manakiki. I will be back. GarPar3 September 5, 2014
Manakiki This course is a great old Donald Ross design. It's a good challenge and conditions are always great. Everything about this place is awesome except for the starter. He's an unpleasant person full of sarcasm and snide comments. It's really not the start I'm looking for in a great round of golf. Don't let that stop you from playing here though this course is amazing. September 3, 2014
Great course Played the course for the first time Sunday, August 31th. Will play again. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the pace of play. When you have groups walking and other groups riding it slows way down. September 2, 2014
Cleveland Metro courses Good course for the $$$$$$$. A little too tough for the beginner. Lot of blind holes and rough terrain. I enjoyed playing with a 96 year old gentleman they paired me with. Lloyd enjoyed the game, played quickly, and knew all the right things to do. It didn't hurt my ego that he beat me on 3 out of the first 5 holes. Fun, Fun , Fun. August 27, 2014
cant wait to go back Great little Don Ross course. challenging elevation changes, very mountain course like. greens in spectacular condition, bunkers need drainage system as most were filled with water from previous day storm. will definitely play next time I'm in north east Ohio. August 20, 2014
Beautiful course horrible staff I have previously enjoyed playing Manakiki but the staff is making the experience umpleasant which riuns whais supposed to be a relaxing endeavor. I arrived at the course and encountered difficulty with the clubhouse staff regarding paying with a credit in their system which was a gift card purchased by my fiance. I was told in a letter that I only need to have ID but was told by two staff members at the course this was not their policy; can anyone say "consistent message"? This I had to search my car and luckily had kept the letter and the gift card in it; whew! Then to add unsult to injury, I go to the starter shed to tee off and I'm told that I am being paired with a threesome (which is no big deal) to which I agreed. However, the starter then tells me that I need to give back my cart and jump in the cart with a gentleman who is enjoying his pre-round cigarette and I am a non smoker. I politely tell the starter that o would prefer to keep my cart as I paid for a single tee time and after some banter back and forth he relented and paired me with two gentlemen walking. By now I am totally agitated and the beginning of my round reflected it. Perhaps it's time for some of the "old heads" to either simply golf or go home. Back to Sleepy Hollow and Shawnee Hills for me! August 18, 2014
Awesome Donald Ross Classic! Manakiki is classic Donald Ross, which means the greens can account for a lot of strokes. Course can play short, especially Par5s (why did I bogie 3?), but course in excellent condition. Nice hard fairways, but rough will tangle around ball, and especially around the greens, the key word is "commit" to the shot. The only negative thing I can even think of, is the general public doesn't realize how great this place is, evidenced by the un-raked sand bunkers from previous play. August 11, 2014
