Located 17 miles east of downtown Cleveland, Manakiki Golf Course is an elegant public course. The classic Donald Ross design offers a variety of challenges including doglegs, water hazards, up-and-down shots, back-to-back par 5s, short, long, tight, and open holes, and two canyon holes.

Manakiki is rich in history. Its name is believed to be a Native American word for maple forest and was suggested by the predominance of maples along tree-lined fairways. The 200 acres were originally the summer estate of Howard Hanna, a prominent Cleveland indusrialist. The property was then obtained by a group from the Willowick Club and converted into Manakiki Country Club.

The Hanna Mansion was expanded into a beautiful clubhouse. In 1963, the east wing of the original Hanna Mansion, which mirrored the existing west wing was torn down due to a small fire and deterioration. The west wing was recently renovated to preserve its structural integrity and history.

In 1944, the property owners, Janes and Fannie Brown, offered to donate the course to the city of Cleveland. The city graciously declined to offer and it was then sold to Cleveland Metroparks for one dollar, under the condition that it must forever remain a golf course. A plaque in honor of the former owners still stands near the18th green.

From 1944 through 1960, Manakiki was operated as a private country club. On January 1, 1961 after the country club's lease was not renewed, Manakiki was open for public play.

Manakiki offers many great holes; #8 was considered the most difficult par 4 hole on tour in the '50s when Manakiki hosted the Carling Open. Hole #15 has also been selected as one of Cleveland's best par 3 holes. An electric trolley once carried golfers from the 15th green up the steep slope to the #16 tee. The mirror image canyon holes #10 and #18 are among the finest start and finish to nine holes in the country.

In 1990, a master plan was developed to renovate the golf course and restore much of its original character. The plan included installing water and irrigation systems, building a pond on hole #3, and restoring a pond at hole #15. Tees were rebuilt or restored on holes 6, 8, 9, 13, and 15. A continuous cart path was also constructed to assure that golf carts may operate regardless of weather conditions. In addition, sand bunkers that were taken out will gradually be restored to their original state.

Great layout! Tough layout and fast greens- will look forward to playing again. November 12, 2012

nice course Thou no longer in CC condition.Still a v nice course for the$ October 22, 2012
A must course to play if you live in or near Willoughby Hills, Ohio. This course gets my highest rating for a stocked clubhouse full of clothes, clubs, and just about everything you need to play golf with. Staff is very friendly and will take there time to talk to you unlike some golf courses that take your money and aren't very polite. The course itself is challenging and is usually in great condition. Love playing there. Keep up the good work. October 22, 2012
An escape to great golf Manakiki is a wonderful course mixing length, dog legs, rough, hazzards, and bunkers with accuracy. This course is well maintained, and a challenge every step of the way. Bunkers are lined with fine sand offering the opportunity to exit gracefully or not. The rough is a real challenge with the best stratedgy being keep the ball in the fairway. The terrain is frought with inclinations, hills and angles. Course management is as much a part of the game as keeping it in the fairway. The greens require one to read a putt well as there are angles, shelfs and breaks that are not meek. This all interprets into a fun, but challenging course. One will exercise every club, and type of shot know to golf.. Coollll!! October 15, 2012
A great local jewel. By far one of our more fun and challenging courses with great rates.Don't attempt to walk it though unless you're part billygoat, not many flat areas to the architecture, but forgiving if hitting ball good. October 14, 2012
rolling terrain I have played this course many times over last 30 years and always find it a very good challenge, I wish the practice green was redone to reflect the different types of putts you would find on the course. October 12, 2012
Overpriced It is a nice course but I feel that it is overpriced for the area. Paid $40 during the week after the greens were just treated. October 6, 2012
Still A Course Donald Ross would be proud of! Pace of play used to be a problem here, but no evidence on my last visit. Though I've played this course at least 80 times during the past 10 years, it was about the most fun I've ever had there. Tom and his staff have done a great job keeping the course fit during the past 5 years (after a near tragic greens disaster) and , despite the hot, dry Summer, it has held up well! A shot maker's kind of track, you'll still have a good time even if you spray the ball a bit!! October 4, 2012
terrible time the course was in bad shape, and the staff was not helpful at all. the course was PACKED and 18 holes was required to be purchased but only played 9 - refused to give a rain check. why have the tee time available if there are leagues and school functions going on? October 4, 2012
