Van Cortlandt Golf Course is located in the North Bronx close to the Yonkers border. It is the oldest public golf course in the USA. Known as "Vanny" by the locals, it is the most easily accessible NYC course to mass transportation. The #1 train leaves you just a short walk to the course. Over the years many famous people have played at Van Cortlandt. They include Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Joe Lewis and the Three Stooges.

Under new management, Van Cortlandt features seven new greens, new tee boxes, additional cart paths, improved bunkers, and dramatically improved drainage. The cost of these improvements approximates one and a half million dollars. The architect in charge of this renovation is Stephen Kay. This golf course, situated in a park-like setting, is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC without ever having to leave the City.

Great course for winter golf We had a good experience at "The Vanny". We traveled from CT, since our courses were still covered in snow. For the price, it was a good course with a mix of short and long holes. Most par 4s are fairly short, but you do get to "grip it and rip it" on #2 (559 yards), #10 (452 yards) and #12 (550 yards). The holes are all pretty straight with not much there to tangle you up. Water appears on two holes, pretty much right in front of the tee box. #14 has water on the right, but only if you take it way right of the fairway on your approach to the green. Fairways were bumpy and spotty in spots, but that's par for the course when you play winter golf. Hopefully, that will fill in when the grass starts to grow. March 13, 2013
Great course close to NYC I took advantage of the mild weather today and got in a round at Vanny. Course was in great shape for the winter. They have winter rates which were only $30.00 to ride. Great value and a great time. Will be back. January 9, 2013
Too slow You must play it once as it is the oldest public course in America but the slowness of the round and the uselessness of the rangers may prevent a second trip. Layout is strange as the course is divided into different areas that require long cart rides. No flow. A few holes do require some thought but other then that, it lacks character. November 22, 2012
Awful experience This is a waste of time. I spent 2.5 hours on the first 6 holes and left for the day. The course is in poorer shape than other NYC courses and the pace of play was even slower than usual. Don't waste your time and money. October 10, 2012
it is a challenging little course with many oppertunities to shoot a great round. A challenging course that I would recommend to friends. October 9, 2012
Go Play Somewhere Else! Playing this course was painful. I went out in the afternoon because that was the time that worked for my schedule. We teed off around 2:15 and only completed 11 holes by 6:10. I'm a decent golfer, usually shooting in the high 80's or low 90's on tougher courses so I know I wasn't holding people up. In fact on some par 4's, I purposely hit an iron or rescue club off the tee so that I would be off the tee box before the next group came up. The ranger did nothing to speed up play. It was a joke. And unfortunately, like Pelham, another course managed by American Golf, the geese population has grown and so has the problem. October 5, 2012
waited for 30 min, played 6hours, The course close due to sunset before we finish 17. We had to wait for half hour before T time, and could not finish 17. We will never return. September 25, 2012
Nice course, slow pace of play Marshall's need to better control pace of play but course is a great public course in good shape for as much activity it sees September 20, 2012
