The Mattawang Golf Club of today is very true to its original layout. As was typical of course design for private clubs in the 1950’s and early 60’s, the idea was to create a challenging venue, in a natural setting, with a premium placed on shot-making skills.

The course plays to 6805 yards from the back tees, so it has plenty of length. Although often appearing wide and open, the fairways are actually quite tight and golfers quickly discover that the trees which line many of the fairways have been thoughtfully placed to penalize errant shots.

Typical of the design philosophy of the era, most of the greens are small and protected by sand traps. They have rightfully gained a reputation over the past few years as being among the best maintained putting surfaces in the state. Golfers must hit both their tee and approach shots accurately or pay the price.

Mattawang Pace of play was great, since the course is so straightforward. Greens are very small but the surfaces were excellent. July 22, 2014
Slowest round of golf ever! This was the absolute worst golfing experience I've ever had. The course is challenging and in good shape, but the pace if play is absolutely inexcusable. There was no ranger on the course to maintain pace of play. There were foursomes in front of us backed up to the point where you be waiting for two groups on every hole. A few groups ahead of us there was a guy who apparently was playing in the open because he would hit his ball out of bounds off the tee, drive down to where it went out, spend literally 10 minutes looking for his ball, then get back in his cart drive all the way back to the tee box and tee off again. We completed just 14 holes in over 5 hours and got fed up and left. Total joke. This place is just the worse group of inconsiderate golfers who "paid their greens fees too". You also have ball hawk heaven. Witnessed a guy with a rake in his cart stop near the bushes and pull out a dozen balls while there are people on the tee box behind him waiting to hit. Also had my ball picked up by one of these thieves twice. Just a terrible waste of a day should've went somewhere else. When we complained at the end of the round nothing was done or said besides sorry for your frustration. July 22, 2014
The ride was worth it 3different times I've made this trip each time with a different player and they were all pleased. For out skill level (bogey golfers) it was a fair test. Definitely will go there again. July 18, 2014
interesting course very wide fairways along with very playable roughs..the real challenge to this course was getting on the greens..well bunkered and seemed that every green was crowned..could not bump and run here..going back a second time to get another shot at it..highly reccomend playing here..great conditions July 5, 2014
Nice day Old style course, small greens, protected by sandtraps. Greens and fairways were in excellent shape. Sandtraps could use a little sand. Be careful of positioning of shots, tees can get in your line. I would play again for sure. June 30, 2014
Course in Good Shape but Paces of Play Slooooooooooooow Staff was very nice at the club house, starter and turn. Club house itself is very old. Driving range is very poor quality (as far as location/mats where you hit from. Course overall was in good overall shape, except for the bunkers they were like concrete. Greens were good a bit fast but manageable.. Pace of play was very very slow and the friendliness of the patrons was questionable. The Ranger which we saw twice on the course and mentioned it both times, never did anything to speed it along at all.. Group in front were terrible and 2 of the guys were playing multiple balls from each tee (they were that bad)... group behind hit up on us multiple times both walking off greens and in fairways. the golf etiquette of the players at this course was terrible. (and nothing was done to help manage this) My recommendation is not to play this course on the weekend especially in the mornings (i would give it 1 more shot but on a weekend afternoon (as the sheet looked fairly empty for a sunday afternoon) or maybe a weekday. This course has small greens Conditions were good for early summer. The challenge of this course are the small greens that can be tough to read. Food service is lacking compared to other area courses. June 29, 2014
