The Mattawang Golf Club of today is very true to its original layout. As was typical of course design for private clubs in the 1950’s and early 60’s, the idea was to create a challenging venue, in a natural setting, with a premium placed on shot-making skills.

The course plays to 6805 yards from the back tees, so it has plenty of length. Although often appearing wide and open, the fairways are actually quite tight and golfers quickly discover that the trees which line many of the fairways have been thoughtfully placed to penalize errant shots.

Typical of the design philosophy of the era, most of the greens are small and protected by sand traps. They have rightfully gained a reputation over the past few years as being among the best maintained putting surfaces in the state. Golfers must hit both their tee and approach shots accurately or pay the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Where is the sand Overall a decent course as long as you stayed on the fairway and greens. However, there was a little sand in the bunkers and hardpan underneath. Getting out was difficult and forget about getting it anywhere near the pin. Hitting the green was a challenge. I am generally a good bunker player, so taking 2 to get out of 2 bunkers, and only hitting the green once in 5 tries is not acceptable. These bunkers were not acceptable. Fairways and greens were nice, but off the fairway was burned up. August 24, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Definitely good for the money! Less than $45 including cart on Saturday through GolfNow. Can't beat the value if you don't have to drive over an hour. Burger is awesome at the halfway house at the turn. Friendly staff. Front 9 is fairly easy so you can slowly heat up your game. Back 9 gets a little tougher but fun. August 24, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great experience. A very enjoyable golfing experience. Greens were in excellent condition and very consistent. Great time! August 24, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great for beginners Greens were nice, course open, not a lot of trouble. Decent yardage on holes August 22, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Greens excellent condition Great value. Challenging course because of length and approach to small greens. Greens were in excellent condition, holding high approach shots. August 22, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Nice amenities, nice layout, course conditions need improvement Very friendly staff and good amenities, nice pace of play despite the crammed together tee times (2 every 15 minutes). Course itself is nicely laid out. Conditioning lacking, though- tees were spotty and uneven, fairways and greens were a bit shaggy- understandable to some extent as we're in a heat wave. Bunkers were a disgrace though- placed nicely to catch even slightly off line shots around the greens- trouble is there is almost no sand in them, maybe a half inch of fluffed up clay over a hard packed bottom akin to concrete with embedded rocks- your first bunker shot will be a shocker guaranteed. Rated 4 out of 5 by Very Pleasant Round of Golf... I live in Hillsborough and played Mattawang with 3 out of town members of my family. It was very enjoyable, if not "memorable". The course is in good condition and playable at most all levels of play. August 16, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Value for the Money Played on 8/8/15 and course was in great shape. The greens were on the slow side, which I like, but rolled true and held shots. Staff was friendly and monitored the pace of play at the turn, but our tee time was delayed by 15 minutes. My only criticisms of the course are that although the tee boxes were in great shape, quite a few were a bit uneven, leaving us searching for a good place to tee off. I would also suggest that the staff cut back the tree on the right side of the par 5 5th hole, as it is in the way of second shots from the center to right hand side of the fairway. August 9, 2015
