The Mattawang Golf Club of today is very true to its original layout. As was typical of course design for private clubs in the 1950’s and early 60’s, the idea was to create a challenging venue, in a natural setting, with a premium placed on shot-making skills.

The course plays to 6805 yards from the back tees, so it has plenty of length. Although often appearing wide and open, the fairways are actually quite tight and golfers quickly discover that the trees which line many of the fairways have been thoughtfully placed to penalize errant shots.

Typical of the design philosophy of the era, most of the greens are small and protected by sand traps. They have rightfully gained a reputation over the past few years as being among the best maintained putting surfaces in the state. Golfers must hit both their tee and approach shots accurately or pay the price.

Watch Out for Jerks As suggested by other reviews, the course shows its scars from a hard winter. There are many fairways and greens marked with ground under repair. Other greens are not marked, but show damage. The layout is a little bit of back and forth, but it does have some old school character, and has small greens to shoot at to make things a little more interesting. My biggest complaint, and one that was expressed to the pro shop after the round, was the existence of a single who played through us and groups in front of us without even asking. He literally just hit over us and into groups in front of us without even acknowledging we were there, and routinely parked 1-2 feet off the green with the cart. I have never witnessed or experienced such a thing before. After he leapfrogged us on 5, somehow he was behind us again and hit into us on 10. After getting the hint that we were not going to let him go through us again, no matter what, he disappeared to another part of the course. Had he asked or let us wave him through, it may have been different, but to act like he was the only person on the course and not even say a word or respond to our inquiry about what he was doing put not only ourselves but all the players on the course in danger as he just played where he wanted when he wanted. When informing the pro shop, they said they knew who we were talking about, and wish we'd have called and informed them. A ranger would've helped to solve this had one been on the course. So in sum, let the course heal, and get a hot deal on golf now for a decent rate, and you could do worse. Just be prepared for complete jerks on the course. May 19, 2015
They pack em in on this course This course has a few nice holes, but up and down for the most part. A noticeable amount of grieens were under repair and the pace of play is molasses because they pack the course to the brim. This resulted in massive par 3 bottlenecks and long periods between putting out on one hole and teeing off on the next. Pace is an easy fix if they hire more experienced starters...our starter looked about 15 yrs old. Not on my list of immediate replays, but I would play it again. May 19, 2015
Very slow pace, greens hit by winter, fairways nice Played during peak Saturday hours and spent 5 hours and 10 minutes on the course. Greens we're beat up by the harsh last 5-6 weeks of the winter, but fairways and tee boxes were nice. April 25, 2015
Mattawang Saturday April Course was sending groups / tee times too close together. Pace of play was extremely slow and marshals were non existent. Too many golfers playing tips that should be playing whites or yellows. Play was over 5 hours on a course we have played in 3 hrs 15 minutes. Will not go back on a Saturday again. April 20, 2015
Long long round Early in the season so course is still waking up from winter but it was a 5:20 round. April 19, 2015
Great Course Very friendly course. although for first timer it's very challenging. For a beginner like me , a par for a par 5 is a great achievement. April 19, 2015
