Whack Some Balls On New Jersey's Pristine Golf Courses
The New Jersey State Golf Association counts among its members close to 300 golf clubs and courses, so there's plenty to choose from in the state known more for Tony the Tiger Soprano than Eldrick Tiger Woods. But even Tiger wouldn't complain at a course like Baltusrol in Springfield, New Jersey - a course that has hosted more than a dozen national championships. Good luck getting on there. More likely, you can find satisfaction at a public Jersey course like Hominy Hill, billed by the state of NJ as "the crown jewel of the Monmouth County Park System’s golf courses. . . a classic Robert Trent Jones design (which) is often rated as New Jersey’s #1 public golf course.

Non-residents get "whacked" a bit on the greens fees (in the $80 range), but it's money that goes into beautifying background shots for HBO, so you can probably take comfort in that. Jersey's renowned shore line also has some very affordable golf.

The Sand Barrens Golf Club in Swainton, N.J. has breathtaking views and challenging course selections. It's semi-private and the fees are, as you'd expect, more reasonable in off-peak months. Don't be afraid to golf deep into the fall on the Jersey Shore. And if you do get rained or weathered out, you can check out the United States Golf Association and its Museum, Library and Archives located in Far Hills. As with tee times, call ahead for booking and more information.
